  23.         *** JUST WHAT IS WINCHECK ***
  24.  
  25.  WinCheck is designed to manage any number of checking, savings, and credit
  26.  card accounts.  Since WinCheck's initial release last year, it has
  27.  developed into a top-notch financial manager.  WinCheck's features include
  28.  a Check Form Designer, to build check templates for printing on virtually
  29.  any pre-printed check form (dot matrix and laser checks are both supported).
  30.  
  31.  The Custom Report Maker allows you to view and print a variety of supplied
  32.  reports, such as cash flow reports, or create custom reports tailored to your
  33.  own needs.  With the Custom Report Maker, you can print an entertainment
  34.  expense report, a credit/deposit history, or all tax deductible transactions
  35.  for the year to date.
  36.  
  37.  WinCheck's transaction classifications, or "categories," allow you to keep
  38.  track of the money earned and spent on categories such as Business and 
  39.  Entertainment.  WinCheck's budgeting facilities can be used in combination
  40.  with these categories to plan a monthly budget.  Add reoccurring transactions
  41.  to a menu or have WinCheck remind you to make transactions such as mortgage
  42.  payments and paycheck deposits. WinCheck also supports Windows Dynamic Data
  43.  Exchange (DDE) and sports an internal batch language.

  45.  WinCheck offers an exceptionally attractive and intuitive user interface
  46.  featuring a Control Bar, Status Bar, iconic "Toolbox," and check registers
  47.  with adjustable column widths.  Checks and other transactions appear as 3-D
  48.  dialog boxes with bitmapped backgrounds.  Screen colors and fonts are fully
  49.  customizable.  Standard operations, such as writing checks and making deposits,
  50.  may be performed by clicking on icons from the Control Bar.

  52.  The online help facility and intuitive user interface pretty much precludes
  53.  the need for a manual, although the 200 page, heavily illustrated manual 
  54.  does further detail many of WinCheck's features with various examples.

  80.  This new 3.0 version has a variety of new features.  They are:
  81.  
  82.    a) Quicken import capability
  83.    b) Custom report generation
  84.    c) Color and font customization
  85.    d) Improved help files
  86.    e) Ability to print Landscape checks (with newer printer drivers)
  87.    f) Ability to handle multiple accounts
  88.    g) No limit on number of monthly transactions

  90.  New to version 3.0H of WinCheck:
  91.  
  92.   a) New "Print Direct" feature for printing one check at a time to
  93.      Dot-Matrix style printers (no page eject).
  94.  
  95.   b) Categories can now be classified as Income, Expense, or Both. 
  96.      All of your categories from your current version will default to
  97.      "Both".  You can modify these categories to specify income or 
  98.      expense with the "Edit Categories" dialog.  By indicating Income
  99.      or Expense, your budget reports will be more informational.
  100.  
  101.   c) Categories can be classified as Tax deductible.  When you enter a
  102.      new transaction, the "Tax Deductible" box will automatically check
  103.      when you select one of these categories.  You can, however, still
  104.      un-check the box if you desire.
  105.  
  106.   d) Expandability!  WinCheck now allows you to add custom tools to your
  107.      menu.  These tools use DDE to communicate with WinCheck.  Two NEW
  108.      tools have been included, PAYROLL.EXE and BALANCE.EXE.  Try them!
  109.      They are on the TOOLS menu.
  110.  
  111.      All of the information you need for using WinCheck's DDE can be
  112.      found in the DDE.TXT file.
  113.  
  114.      The source code to PAYROLL and the source code to a more simple
  115.      add-on tool (Visual Basic) have been included on the distribution
  116.      disk in the DDE_VB.ZIP file.  Sample code for hardcore SDK tools
  117.      may be found in the DDE_SDK.ZIP file.

  119.  e)  The categories for the Budget, Cash Flow, Profit/Loss, and category
  120.      reports are now in alphabetical order (instead of order of entry).

  122.  f)  New pre-defined categories on startup of account or by running a
  123.      WinCheck command file.

  126.           *** REGISTRATION REMINDERS ***
  127.  
  128.  Evaluation copies of WinCheck are 100% fully functional.  The sole
  129.  limitation you may find is that the evaluation copies are unable to
  130.  import data generated by previous versions of the WinCheck program.

  132.  Evaluation copies of WinCheck have a pesky registration reminder screen
  133.  that pops up whenever you start the program.  Thats it!
  134.  
  135.  We're not going to beat you about the head and shoulders with our
  136.  reminder screens.  We're sure that once you see the incredible quality
  137.  of our software, you will dig out your credit card, pick up the phone,
  138.  call the nice people at our 800 number and register WinCheck.

  158.       *** FOR WINCHECK <= 2.2A USERS ***
  159.  
  160.   Evaluation copies of WinCheck cannot convert data files from
  161.   previous versions of WinCheck.
  162.  
  163.   If you are using WinCheck Version 2.2A or lesser, converting
  164.   to WinCheck 3.0 data is easy!  Just open the account in
  165.   WinCheck 3.0.  WinCheck will ask you for starting Balances.
  166.   Leave all values at 0.00.  The account will be named "Previous
  167.   Version".  Type in your own personal description of the account
  168.   (i.e. "My Personal Savings").  When prompted for a checkbook,
  169.   just press OK.  Basically, accepting the default values will
  170.   convert your account perfectly!  For more information refer to
  171.   Appendix D, "Updating from Previous Version", on the WinCheck
  172.   User's manual. 
  173.  
  174.  
  175.        *** HOW TO INSTALL WINCHECK ***
  176.  
  177.  This installation assumes that you either have an ZIP file that you
  178.  just unzipped that contains WinCheck, or that you are looking at one
  179.  of our evaluation diskettes.  In any case, installation is simple:
  180.  
  181.     1) Create a new temporary directory to hold some files during the
  182.        installation process.  This directory will be deleted later.
  183.     
  184.        E.G.     C:\XXX
  185.  
  186.     2) Copy ALL the files from the installation diskette or the unzip
  187.        directory to the directory you just created.
  188.  
  189.     3) Run the WCMAKE.EXE program.  It will create all the files required
  190.        to run the WinCheck setup program.
  191.  
  192.     4) If you are not already running Windows...start Windows.
  193.  
  194. THEN...
  195.  
  196.  Use our SETUP-WC.EXE program, which will copy the files for you and install 
  197.  a WINCHECK group in the program manager with a TUT (Tutorial) account.
  198.  To use our SETUP-WC.EXE program...
  199.  
  200.    1) Close down all extraneous Windows applications.
  201.  
  202.    2) Then do ONE of the following:
  203.  
  204.        A) From File Manager,  locate then double click the SETUP-WC.EXE
  205.           file in the directory you copies the files to:
  206.  
  207.           OR
  208.  
  209.        B) From Program Manager, pull down the FILE menu, and select the
  210.           RUN oprion.  Enter the full path to the SETUP-WC.EXE file, as in
  211.               "C:\XXX\SETUP-WC.EXE"
  212.           and hit ENTER.
  213.  
  214.    3) When the setup program asks for a directory, specify initial directory,
  215.       or accept the given default (C:\WINCHECK).
  216.  
  217.    4) When the next dialog box shows up, you can select what you want to
  218.       install.  If there is any doubt, select everything by hitting the
  219.       "Add All" button.
  220.  
  221.    5) Then push the INSTALL button to install WinCheck.
  222.  
  223.    6) When the setup process is complete, you may delete the temporary
  224.       directory you created in the first step.

  229.           *** PRINTING PROBLEMS? ***
  230.  
  231.     Refer to the On-Line Help topic "Printing Checks" for help with 
  232.     printing checks to a Dot Matrix Printer.
  233.     
  234.     Most printer drivers have special features that take added
  235.     advantage of the Windows 3.0 environment.  WinCheck assumes
  236.     that you have one of these drivers installed.  Some older
  237.     printer drivers, and current versions of some font packages
  238.     (Bitstream Facelift) do not support these features. 
  239.  
  240.     If WinCheck does not print properly on your system, add the
  241.     following line to the [WiChk14a] section of your WIN.INI file:
  242.  
  243.     NODEVMODE=1
  244.  
  245.     This line will cause WinCheck to bypass the special printer
  246.     driver features that cause the problems.  Note:  You will not
  247.     be able to print landscape checks if you use the NODEVMODE=1
  248.     option.

  365.  is it free software.
